Edward Walford Manifold was born on 28th April 1892 and grew up in the Western District of Victoria. Together with his older brother William Herbert (Bee), he travelled to England to join the Royal Field Artillery when World War I broke out. Day by day, this blog publishes his letters home and the entries he made in his diaries, from 1915 when he was first sent to France until 1918 when his service ends.

I am very grateful to Julie, who has made a map available, showing exactly where the events of this diary are taking place. Huge thanks. Julie also runs the excellent Sydney Eye and Whispering She-Oak blogs
Also, I have bought me a copy of Chatwin's 'On the Black HIll'. I tried Borders in Bondi Junction. Zilch. So this evening after going to the Verona Cinema in Paddo, I went into the main Berkelouw outlet, and bingo! I will start it after I finish a book of Ann Enright's short stories.
Very mean of you to remind me you have the Verona up there. We don't seem to get nearly as many interesting films down here since Electric Shadows closed - and we never ever got the number that the Verona gives you access to. Not sure our good cycle paths quite make up for this.
*grin* I am sure they don't. Things are altering a little here though. The Academy closed earlier this year due to a leasing dispute. So now Palace Cinemas are spreading their films across Verona and The Chauvel in the Paddo Town Hall. I enjoy both venues. Quite individual, and not much 'plastic'.
I am looking forward to 'The King's Speech' which I think opens on Boxing Day.
I thank you for the nod.

I have made the first adjustment to this map.
ReplyDeleteWhen locating La Bassee Road, I was originally given a choice of 3 locations, and chose the closest.
However, whem I scanned the map myself in close detail, I found a La Bassée which was much much closer and really the most logical choice.
Hence, I have linked the blue line to that La Bassée.
I suspect the acute made all the difference.
